Crochet Gauge Calculator

Calculate stitch tension per centimeter and inch, normalize standard 10 cm and 4-inch gauge, and estimate project stitch and row counts.

Tension & Gauge Calculator

Enter the stitches and rows counted across the center of your swatch, then optionally enter your target project width and height.

Where to obtain swatch measurements: Work a swatch larger than 12 × 12 cm in your project stitch pattern, lay it flat without stretching, and place a rigid ruler across the representative central 10 cm area (excluding edge stitches and the starting chain).Center: 10 cmCentral span: 10 cmCount stitches in the middle areaexcluding distorted outer edges.

Estimated Project Counts & Dimensions

Step-by-Step Input Instructions

  1. 1Select Centimeters (cm) or Inches (in) to match the ruler used on your gauge swatch.
  2. 2Enter the number of stitches counted across the central area of your swatch (whole or half stitches) and the measured width.
  3. 3Optionally enter the number of rows counted and the measured height over those rows.
  4. 4Optionally enter a target project width and height to estimate the stitch and row counts required at your swatch gauge.

How This Calculation Works

Gauge is the fundamental conversion constant connecting your physical hook, yarn, and human hands to the geometric measurements in a pattern. If your gauge differs from the designer's gauge, your finished project will turn out too small or too large, and will consume a different amount of yarn.

To calculate stitch gauge, Yarnivo divides the number of counted stitches by the measured span:

Stitches per Unit = Stitches Counted ÷ Measured Width

Because 1 inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, 4 inches equals 10.16 cm. Yarnivo computes 10cm gauge and 4-inch gauge separately rather than conflating them:

  • 10 cm Gauge = (Stitches / Width in cm) × 10
  • 4 Inch Gauge = (Stitches / Width in inches) × 4 = (Stitches / Width in cm) × 10.16

When you provide a target project width, Yarnivo multiplies your target dimension by your stitch density and rounds to the nearest whole integer.

Assumptions

  • Gauge is measured over a representative flat area of fabric, avoiding edge stitches and initial foundation chains.
  • Stitches and rows are counted across a continuous swatch worked in the same stitch pattern intended for the finished piece.
  • Tension remains uniform throughout the project and matches the measured swatch.

Practical Limitations

  • A gauge calculator cannot predict how much a specific fiber blend or stitch structure will relax when washed or blocked.
  • It does not prescribe a specific hook size change based solely on stitch gauge, because changing hooks affects drape and row height simultaneously.
  • Stitch count estimates round to the nearest whole stitch, and finished dimensions can still vary with yarn weight, gravity, and hand tension.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

10 cm Swatch for a 35 × 40 cm Cushion Panel

A crocheter works a single crochet swatch in DK cotton and counts 20 stitches and 16 rows across a 10 × 10 cm square.

Inputs: 20 stitches over 10 cm width, 16 rows over 10 cm height, 35 cm target width, 40 cm target height.
Math: 20 st ÷ 10 cm = 2.0 st/cm (35 cm × 2.0 = 70.0 st). 16 rows ÷ 10 cm = 1.6 rows/cm (40 cm × 1.6 = 64.0 rows).
Estimated Result: ~70 whole stitches (~35.0 cm estimated width) and ~64 rows (~40.0 cm estimated height). Normalized gauge = 20.0 st/10cm and 20.3 st/4in.
Worked Example 2

Imperial 4-Inch Swatch for a 48 × 60 Inch Blanket

A crocheter measures 15 stitches and 14 rows across a 4 × 4 inch swatch in worsted weight yarn.

Inputs: 15 stitches over 4 in width, 14 rows over 4 in height, 48 in target width, 60 in target height.
Math: 15 st ÷ 4 in = 3.75 st/in (48 in × 3.75 = 180 st). 14 rows ÷ 4 in = 3.5 rows/in (60 in × 3.5 = 210 rows).
Estimated Result: ~180 whole stitches (~48.0 in estimated width) and ~210 rows (~60.0 in estimated height). Normalized gauge = 15.0 st/4in and 14.8 st/10cm.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • ✕Treating 10 cm and 4 inches as identical: 4 inches equals 10.16 cm (1 inch = 2.54 cm), creating a 1.6% scaling difference when converting between US and metric patterns.
  • ✕Measuring gauge across the outermost edge stitches or foundation chain, where tension is often looser or tighter than the interior fabric.
  • ✕Measuring an unblocked swatch when the finished item will be washed and blocked; according to the Craft Yarn Council, swatches should be washed and dried in the same manner planned for the finished project before measuring.
