Worked Calculation Examples

Step-by-step hypothetical examples showing how gauge measurements, border deductions, stitch multiples, and swatch mass estimates fit together. Click any preload link below to open the calculator with those exact inputs filled in.

Important Craft Transparency Notice:

These scenarios are worked mathematical examples designed to demonstrate sizing formulas, rounding trade-offs, and swatch-based yarn estimation. They are not physically tested crochet patterns. Always measure and weigh your own gauge swatch before purchasing yarn.

Worked Example • Blanket / Afghan

Worked Example 1: Rectangular Blanket with Side Borders

Planning a 90 × 110 cm baby blanket featuring a textured ripple motif (multiple of 6 + 2) and a 5 cm border on all four sides.

Note: Hypothetical worked example for planning illustration; not a physically tested crochet pattern.

Example Inputs

Desired Finished Width90 cm (inner target: 80 cm)
Desired Finished Length110 cm (inner target: 100 cm)
Border Width Per Side5 cm on all 4 sides
Measured Stitch Gauge18 stitches per 10 cm (1.8 st/cm)
Measured Row Gauge14 rows per 10 cm (1.4 rows/cm)
Pattern Repeat Multiple (m)6 stitches
Extra Stitches (e)2 stitches
Foundation Chain Offset (c)1 chain (turning offset)
Swatch Mass6.5 grams (10 × 10 cm swatch)
Skein Size100 g skeins (250 m each)

Step-by-Step Calculation & Estimates

1. Inner Target Dimensions:Width = 90 − (2 × 5) = 80 cm | Length = 110 − (2 × 5) = 100 cm
80.0 × 100.0 cm inner panel
2. Raw Inner Stitch Target:80 cm × 1.8 st/cm
144.0 stitches
3. Fit Repeat Formula S = n×6 + 2:(144 − 2) ÷ 6 = 23.67 → closest whole repeat is 24 repeats
24 × 6 + 2 = 146 first-row st
4. Estimated Width at 146 Stitches:Inner: 146 ÷ 1.8 = 81.1 cm | Finished with 2×5 cm border: 81.1 + 10
~91.1 cm finished width
5. Starting Foundation Chain:C = S + c = 146 + 1
147 foundation chains
6. Estimated Inner Row Count:100 cm × 1.4 rows/cm
~140 rows
7. Estimated Yarn Mass & Skeins:At 91.1 × 110 cm (~10,021 cm², 100.2× swatch): 100.2 × 6.5g = 651.4g (+10% buffer = 716.5g). At 90 × 110 cm target: 643.5g (+10% = 707.9g).
8 skeins of 100g (~708–717 g)
Worked Example • Scarf / Wrap

Worked Example 2: Rectangular Winter Scarf

Planning a 22 × 180 cm winter scarf worked in an alternating textured stitch (multiple of 2 + 1) in aran-weight yarn.

Note: Hypothetical worked example for planning illustration; not a physically tested crochet pattern.

Example Inputs

Target Width22 cm
Target Length180 cm
Measured Stitch Gauge14 stitches per 10 cm (1.4 st/cm)
Measured Row Gauge12 rows per 10 cm (1.2 rows/cm)
Repeat Multiple (m)2 stitches
Extra Stitches (e)1 stitch
Foundation Chain Offset (c)2 chains
Swatch Mass9.0 grams (10 × 10 cm swatch)
Skein Size100 g skeins (160 m each)

Step-by-Step Calculation & Estimates

1. Raw Stitch Target:22 cm × 1.4 st/cm = 30.8 → rounds to 31 stitches
31 stitches
2. Check Repeat Formula S = n×2 + 1:(31 − 1) ÷ 2 = 15 whole repeats (compatible)
31 first-row st (~22.1 cm wide)
3. Starting Foundation Chain:C = S + c = 31 + 2
33 foundation chains
4. Estimated Row Count:180 cm × 1.2 rows/cm
~216 rows
5. Estimated Yarn Mass & Skeins:Area ratio = (22 × 180) ÷ 100 = 39.6. Base = 39.6 × 9.0g = 356.4g. +10% buffer = 392.0g.
4 skeins of 100g (~392 g)
Worked Example • Flat Row Shaping

Worked Example 3: Flat Row Shaping Transition (60 → 84 Stitches)

Calculating balanced single-pass increases to transition from a 60-stitch ribbed hem to an 84-stitch main body panel (a multiple of 6 + 0).

Note: Hypothetical worked example for planning illustration; not a physically tested crochet pattern.

Example Inputs

Current Stitch Count (N)60 stitches
Target Stitch Count (T)84 stitches
Stitch OperationStandard 1-to-2 increases (+24 st)

Step-by-Step Calculation & Estimates

1. Operations Count:T − N = 84 − 60
24 increases
2. Plain Stitches Available:N − k = 60 − 24
36 plain stitches
3. Interval Division:q = floor(36 ÷ 24) = 1; remainder r = 36 mod 24 = 12
12 groups of (2 plain + inc), 12 groups of (1 plain + inc)
4. Interleaved Row Sequence:Alternates [Work 2 st, inc in next st] and [Work 1 st, inc in next st] across 12 pairs
Consumes 60 st → produces 84 st
